The Russian Federation systematically loots and destroys the cultural heritage of Ukraine, in particular, archeological monuments and museum values.
The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) is launching a new section within the framework of the “War and Art” project – “Stolen Heritage”. It will list all the cultural objects stolen by the Russians on the territory of Ukraine during the war. The agency reported this on Thursday, October 19, on the agency’s official website.
According to the authors of the project, the database should exclude the possibility of trading in robbery.
“The theft of Ukrainian cultural property by the Russian Federation is a war crime. The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) is launching a new section “Stolen Heritage” as part of the “War and Art” project. It should help prevent the illegal trade in art and antiquities stolen by Russian occupiers in Ukraine during the war,” the statement said.
The database already includes 245 cultural objects.
The NAPC emphasized that the Russian Federation systematically loots and destroys the cultural heritage of Ukraine, in particular, archaeological monuments and museum values.
“This activity has been an instrument of its aggressive policy since 2014. Stolen cultural property has been transferred throughout the territory of Russia, becoming part of exhibitions, private collections of Russians, and subjects of research of different institutions,” the agency said in a statement.
Experts have expressed hope that an open database of stolen goods will prevent the Russians from selling loot, and will also help return valuables to Ukraine.
“Our common task is to find every little piece of the world’s cultural heritage stolen by the Russian Federation and return it,” said NAPC Chairman Alexander Novikov.
The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption has published one of the largest lists of works of art in the private collection of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. It includes 367 works of art, valued at nearly $1 billion.
The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption has launched a Unified Whistleblower Reporting Portal. Here, citizens can report recorded facts of corruption.
