Sunday night, John Oliver insulted Republicans for their usual response to mass shootings.
“We all know what’s the main problem here: it’s a weapon,” Oliver said. “This is because we allow, mainly those who want to buy weapons in this country, to have what leads to tragic consequences”.
Most of the mass killers, including the assailant who killed 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Wawald, Texas last month, were legally in possession of a firearm.
“So we know what the answer to this problem is: gun control,” the host said last night. “These are important and effective gun laws.”
Republicans, however, are “desperately pushing” other decisions. Oliver has played conservative music videos calling on everyone from religion to ballistic blankets to schools.
“What are you saying?!?” Oliver asked. “Using blankets is not a strategy to stop a school hunt. It’s certainly not a” hit home “strategy.
But one of the most talked about issues, especially from the right, is about getting more police into schools, although there have been some cases where police have stopped alleged mass shooters. And in many cases, officials themselves harm children they have sworn to protect, especially children of color:
