Kwangya, SYNK, naevis, POS, and more: stay up to date with the terms used in the aespa universe
In 2020, the aespa debuted by presenting a very innovative concept to the world of k-pop, which seeks to unite the virtual with the real. The group’s name itself is a union of the English words “avatar”, “aspect” and “experience”, which mean avatar, aspect and experience, in Portuguese.
At the time, the founder and former CEO of SM Entertainment, Lee Soomanstated during a statement about the group’s debut that the name means “being able to live the experience of a new world through a new avatar of yourself”.
Since then, fans have been introduced to the unique universe of aespa, with specific terms used to explain a little more of the history of this world, where, often, some new admirers can get confused among so many different words.
With this in mind, RECREIO prepared a glossary of the aespa universe so you don’t get lost anymore. Check out!
ae — They are virtual versions of someone, formed from information collected from the internet. In aespa, each member also has their ae version, called ae-Karina, ae-Giselle, ae-Winter and ae-Ningning.
Black Mamba — She was the first major villain in this universe to be introduced. She was responsible for interfering with the connection between humans and ae. Therefore, she ended up fighting a battle against the aespa members who tried to prevent her sovereignty.
Ether — It is an unconscious world, where Kwangya emerged with the intention of filtering this place.
Flat — Place where all ae live.
Kwangya — Dimension created from Ether. It is a kind of “city” that is constantly expanding, but can be very dangerous.
Kosmo — A place of peace and harmony that no one has ever visited. It is the opposite of Kwangya.
naevis — Artificial intelligence responsible for helping aespa members reconnect with their ae. For now, naevis is also the only one capable of opening a POS. In 2023, she even made a special appearance in the song “Welcome to MY World”, in which she presents the new chapter in the group’s history, after defeating the Black Mamba.
POS — Acronym for “Portal of Soul”. POS is nothing more than a portal responsible for connecting Flat to the real world.
Rekall — Term used to describe the time limit in which ae can remain outside the Flat, in the real world.
SYNK — It is a human’s connection with their ae. Through it, we have the opportunity to create our own virtual version, maintaining constant contact with it.
Synkout — Term used to talk about a SYNK failure after being cut by the Black Mamba.
Synk Dive — When an ae and its human come into sync, the consciousnesses are said to have had a “Synk Dive”. With this, the two have the ability to share perceptions, as if they were one body.
SMCU — It is the acronym for “SM Culture Universe”. This is the integrated universe where all SM Entertainment groups live. A kind of K-pop MCU.
