November 1975. Intellectual and revolutionary Pierre Goldman is tried for four robberies, one of which led to the death of two women. He knows all of them, except the last one, for which he faces the death penalty. If the intellectual left (Régis Debray, Simon Signore, etc.) is committed to the cause of this free and provocative thinker, his excesses and impudence risk damaging him. Retelling the highly publicized trial of the time, Cédric Kahn (Roberto Succo, Fête de Famille…) raises questions that are still relevant today about anti-Semitism, the power of the public court, the society of the spectacle, and compiles: an undeniable observation about the relativity of justice. This video game novel, structured as a fun maze between different worlds, fictional and real, seems to remind us that life is just a game, good and bad. Sadie and Sam are brilliant computer science students. They met as children under very special circumstances. When they meet again years later, they start developing a video game that becomes an instant hit and becomes famous. But how can we live up to fans’ expectations and repeat the miracle?
Sam and Sadie’s relationship is a ball of complex emotions that seems inseparable when the tandem joins the partnership of Marks, a charismatic personality, unlike Sam, shy and philanthropic, suffering from a disability that forces him to walk with a cane. Sadie, for her part, never stops pushing herself to the point of burning her wings. Sam was born into a Korean family and lost his mother in a car accident at a young age. Sadie, from a Jewish family in Los Angeles, joins the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and struggles to recover from a toxic relationship with a professor. Marx comes from a rich, bourgeois family and must break free from his parents’ expectations.
All three will face their doubts and demons. The luxuries and miseries of creativity, friendship, love. Just as cinema was considered a minor fair art in its early days, video games are often seen as entertainment without grandeur. This novel reminds us that it creates real works of art. The references here reach from Homer to Shakespeare through the Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong games without the slightest hint of hierarchy. IP:
