How are men approaching women in 2023? If some say they are lost, others respectfully reinvent the temptation.
In an exhibition currently on display at the Royal Marly Museum, Evelyn, a 17th-century canvase century depicts a courtier decked out in chivalry in a lace shirt, wig, eye make-up, and fan in hand, wooing a handsome stranger. Titled: Seduction and power, erotic, romantic and political issues are mixed in the exhibition. Meanwhile, at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, renowned sculptor Ron Mueck presents the vision of modern man through his impressive installation. The man in the boat alone in a small boat floating in the middle of space, a naked man sits at the bow, leaning over, looking questioningly into the future.
The contrast between the two scenes is striking. The former elevates the romantic tenderness that today is called “flirt”, evoking the archetype of the playful, cheeky and seductive man; the second, in a hyper-realistic aesthetic, describes the male who watches the male, cut off…
