How do you avoid being swallowed up at the beginning of the school year?

EXCLUSIVE LETTER TO SUBSCRIBERS – A place of 100% free expression for anyone looking for a better way to balance their professional and personal lives.

We could do before/after. We at H. Versus us today at the end of July, the day before the holidays. Personally, when I compare these two selves, I find it hard to accept that they are the same person. It even scares me enough. My BP version (before hiatus) looks like someone I’d like to see as little as possible, and primarily from a distance. Stressed, overwhelmed, quick to anger, both “focused” and washed up. Explosive cocktail… A month later, even after several days of “taking it back”, I have clear ideas, the desire is there, the energy is flowing, everything is focused. I even smile at strangers. I found a sense of mastery and ease, a joy that I wish I could keep for a long time without going back to the washing machine, in the spin mode.

Work better to live better. how to find balance

Is it possible? We all don’t know. Because individual effort doesn’t weigh much against the group logic that runs the race. Our collective energies lack the wisdom of our individual decisions. And we quickly become addicted to the adrenaline of exertion… Moreover, published studies perfectly outline this peak that we pass so quickly. Because, sociologist Marc Loriol teaches us in his recent essay, “Worka Addiction, From Individual Pathology to Collective Management of Commitment,” the French work too much, often beyond the time they are paid for. In 2022, more than 10% of the active population worked 49 hours a week or more, reports Eurostat. Overtime is increasing everywhere and now affects 32% of workers (INSEE 2023). Real workload or overcommitment? The line between these two evils is sometimes soft, which, however, the sociologist clearly distinguishes, raising the issue of the weight of organization, bureaucracy in company life, but also questioning our relationship with overheating.

Working more seems to have become the norm, hyperactivity is gaining ground, we now see it as a guarantee of credibility, a social standard. Who else would admit over dinner that they aren’t really overwhelmed? We are addicted to our phone to work. it should be there, available. Moreover, our smartphones have become our mobile offices. We check our emails when we wake up, one last time before bed. Private and professional times intertwine and interrupt each other, collide, hence this sense of suffocation that excites us as much as it exhausts us. And faster than it takes time to say poof, we find ourselves playing Tetris with his existence.

With everything pending, why not set some milestones at the start of this school year to live our lives more coherently, if not quietly, while we’re still more or less shellacked? Don’t be too quick to box up this man who a few weeks ago revived in the open air and found breath in contact with nature, friends, the flow of water. How not to become this rare creature again in 2 months, this “workzilla” that we all or almost all of us became in July?

My diagnosis

If you too have decided that your inner self will survive this start of the school year, you can:

– Think about your goals. How do you want to focus this quarter? What would you like to achieve by the end of December? This will give you a course, guidelines, horizon that will make the effort much easier.

– Only kept three (goals) as a professional. Personally too. Each mini list of goals should fit on a post or all on a sheet of notebook paper. NO MORE. Everything else is anything that distracts you from those goals. In this case, therefore, it will be necessary to learn to say “no” for the most part. It will prevent you from wasting your energy.

– Work on your energy. “Everything we do in life, the goals we achieve, are just energy,” explains the famous American “spiritual teacher” Asha Nayaswamy. Our ability to achieve them depends on the quantity and quality of energy we invest in them, but also on our ability to develop them. So what’s really important to us is we’re working to create an open, sunny, positive energy that also has the great benefit of being communicative and self-healing.

– Feed yourself. We have all become “givers”…it is important to “fill up” when we give too much. Sign up for an ecological festival, that Collège de France conference you’ve been dreaming of attending, breathing or gardening classes, or an internship that offers kissing trees. Do it now. in a week you’ll be hooked.

– Generate RTTs. We don’t talk enough about the importance of rest, recovery, which shouldn’t be about being more productive. But just to relax, so.

– If not, once a week, to do something alone.

– Do you know this sentence: “I don’t know?” Feel free to use it 😉
