The American adventure fantasy comedy directed by Greta Gerwig has become the highest-grossing film of 2023. Variety reports.
The film grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, surpassing Universal and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. animated outing. Movie ($1.35 billion).
The film has reportedly exceeded expectations since its theatrical release in July, earning $162 million, making it the best debut of the year. Barbie remained at number one for four consecutive weekends and eventually became the highest-grossing film directed exclusively by a woman. It is now the 14th biggest domestic release and the 15th biggest worldwide release in history.
In addition, Barbie became the highest-grossing worldwide release by Warner Bros. of all time, surpassing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Part 2 ($1.34).
Barbie was previously reported to be the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history.
