7 curiosities about the Blue Beetle

Did Blue Beetle take vitamins? Discover this and other curious facts about the character in the list!

Opening this Thursday, the 17th, “Blue Beetle” is DC’s newest bet in theaters! The production, which Xolo Maridueña in the role of the hero, it shows how the young Jaime Reys acquires superhuman abilities after becoming the guardian of an ancient artifact that receives the name of scarab. Remember the trailer!

1. There is more than one version of Blue Beetle

In all, three men were able to obtain the title of Blue Beetle. Are they:

  1. Dan Garret — created in 1939, appeared in the comics “Mystery Men Comics 1”, from Fox Comics
  2. Ted Kord — created in 1966, the character appears in the magazine “Captain Atom”
  3. Jaime Reyes — created in 2006 after Ted’s death in the comics

2. Did Beetle Blue have a radio show?

Yes! When he debuted in the comics, Blue Beetle became a huge blockbuster in the US. So much so that he had his own radio show in 1940, as well as winning “Blue Beetle Day” at the New York World’s Fair the previous year.

3. The source of the powers was a vitamin

In the hero’s first appearance, he is depicted as a detective with no powers. Starting in 1940, the source of the first Blue Beetle’s super abilities was… a vitamin! This substance — called Vitamin 2X — gave Dan Garret super strength and super endurance.

4. Blue Beetle inspired the creation of another great character

The Beetle Ted Kord is the source of inspiration for the creation of the Owl, a character from the classic comic book Watchmen, from Alan Moore.

5. Co-creator with Spider-Man

Any resemblance between Spider-Man and Blue Beetle is not mere coincidence! That’s because, one of Ted Kord’s co-creators is none other than Steve Ditkothe man who gave the world Friend of the Neighborhood, alongside Stan Lee.

6. Unreleased live action appearance? None of that…

Did you know that the Beetle that stars in this year’s film, Jaime Reyes, has appeared on screens before? This happened in an episode of the tenth season of the series Smallville. This episode was written by renowned screenwriter of comics, Geoff Johns.

7. City change is now canon

In the comics, the Beetle Jaime Reyes is described as living in El Paso, a real city in the United States. In the film, however, he lives in the fictional Palmera City, a place that has now become canonical on the pages as well.
