Understand the importance of the song “Running Up That Hill” for Max in the new season
Set in the 80s, Stranger Things has numerous references to that decade, with easter eggs ranging from movies and series, to music and celebrities. With the premiere of the first part of the fourth season, a very famous name of the time returned to the most talked about subjects thanks to a quote in the production: the British singer Kate Bush.
Bush became known worldwide in 1978, thanks to the release of the song “Wuthering Heights”, which was inspired by the gothic novel “Wuthering Heights”, from 1847, written by the author Emily Bronte.

In the new episodes, the artist plays an important role in the plot, as her song “Running Up That Hill”, featured on the 1985 album “Hounds of Love”, becomes responsible for saving Max’s life (Sadie Sink), who was possessed by the spirit of Vecna. But why was music able to save her?
In addition to being the character’s favorite song, the lyrics also manage to comfort the heart of the girl who feels guilty for the death of her brother, Billy (Dacre Montgomery), who died in season three while trying to save Max and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
At one point in the song, Kate Bush sings the following line: “And if I could only / Make a deal with God / I’d have Him put me in your place.”
You can see Max’s strong connection to the track through the letter she writes and reads when she visits Billy’s grave, where it says pretty much the same thing as the song. At the time, she says: “Sometimes I imagine myself running to you and pushing you away. [da morte]. I imagine if I had done that, you would still be here.”
Vecna’s spell
While revisiting the trauma of her brother’s death, Max ends up being possessed by the spirit of Vecna, which takes over her body and starts to cast a curse and suck the energy of all the young people who are going through a confused moment or carry trauma and guilt. in their trajectories.
Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Robin (Maya Hawke) are responsible for discovering after a long investigation that music is capable of ending the spell cast by the villain. Thanks to this information, Dustin (GatenMatarazzo) and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) save Max’s life by putting a cassette tape of Kate Bush on a Walkman for the girl to listen to.
The first part of the fourth season of Stranger Things premiered on the streaming platform Netflix last Friday, the 27th. The second volume with the final episodes of the season will be released on July 1st. See the trailer!
