In celebration of Garfield’s 45th birthday, check out some curiosities about the feline that loves lasagna the most
45 years ago the cat Garfield appeared for the first time! The character who loves to eat lasagna and pizza, and who doesn’t miss the opportunity to take a nap, had his first strip published on June 19, 1978. Since then, the orange pussy has been successful for several generations.
Check out the first strip published!
Garfield was created by Jim Davis and, throughout its existence, it has already won 4 Emmy awards, the main award for television productions, in addition to having several films and series, whether cartoons or live-actions. Currently, fans can follow the character’s adventures on Nickelodeon.
And to celebrate this anniversary, RECREIO brought 5 facts about Garfield that you need to know!
1. Name
Davis didn’t choose the name Garfield for nothing. The orange cat got its name because its creator wanted to pay homage to his grandfather, who was called James A. Garfield Davis.
2. Around the World
Although most countries have known the character as Garfield, there are some nations that have renamed the pussy. This is the case in Sweden, Norway and Finland, where the cat is known as Gustav.
3. Main Character
At first, Garfield would not be the protagonist of the strips, but his owner, Jon Arbuckle. However, when Davis took the stories to the publishers, he was instructed to place the feline as the protagonist.
Also, many people don’t know, but Jon is a cartoonist. The character’s profession is mentioned in the first published Garfield strip.
4. Versions
Garfield’s look hasn’t always been the same over the years. The first version of the feline, made in 1978, was fatter and more realistic. After 12 years, the kitten gained a new version, with a more humane form when it started to walk with only its hind legs.
In 1990, the pussy was already on the way to being as fans know it today, but it was only in the 2000s that Garfield’s current look was published in comic strips and television productions.
5. Garfield and Monica’s Gang

In 2022, Editora Panini, in partnership with Nickelodeon/Paramount, launched the comic book with a long-awaited crossover by fans: Turma da Mônica & Garfield – O Lápis Mágico. In fact, it is a miniseries divided into three parts, which was developed and produced by Mauricio de Sousa Produções and Jim Davis.
History shows that Bugu is tired of being a supporting character in Bidu’s stories. Because of this, he decides to take Marina’s magic pencil and travel through the Omniverse, which is the collection of all fictional universes ever created, whether in comic books, literary works, movies, among others. He ends up stopping at Garfield’s house and causes Odie to end up in Bairro do Limoeiro. From then on, the orange cat will need the help of Turma da Monica to find his friend.
