In a Greek salad or simply paired with the freshness of tomatoes, we never tire of feta. If you find it everywhere in Greece, it’s a different story in France. “The more you go to supermarkets, the more difficult it is to find quality feta,” laments Alexandre Rallis, founder of the Parisian store Profil Grec (1). magazine columns 60 million consumers (2). To make the best choice, our colleagues conducted extensive research, blind tasting 11 PDO feta and 5 sheep cheeses found in supermarkets. Here is the list.
The preferred AOP tag
“Since 2002, feta has been considered a designation of origin protected under European regulations,” explains Audrey Morris, Foodwatch’s campaign manager in this inquiry. In short, any feta with a PDO designation must come from mainland Greece or the Lesbos region. In addition, its milk must come from local breeds of sheep and goats, raised traditionally and fed on the flora available in the pastures of the respective regions. This doesn’t stop some manufacturers who don’t carry the label from getting away with packaging; olive branches, traditional Greek grinders, Greek salad… Everything is good to confuse the consumer.
