5 Things About ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ That Don’t Make Sense

There are some facts in ‘SpongeBob Squarepants’ that are beyond logic; find it out!

Premiered in 1999 on Nickelodeon, ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ became one of the essential animations in the mornings of those who grew up in the early 2000s, being adored to this day, more than two decades after its first episode.

The plot, which features a yellow sea sponge as the protagonist, addresses the unusual daily life of the character who gives the animation its title as a resident of Bikini Bottom, an employee of the Krusty Krab, owner of the snail Gary and Patrick Estrela’s best friend.

Even though the story gets a lot of laughs and the peculiar events that deviate from normality can be explained by the fantasy and comic tone of the production, it is impossible to deny that there are some facts in the cartoon that do not make any sense. Discover some of them in the list below!

1. Environments and objects that store water

The universe of ‘Bob Esponja Calça Quadrada’ is located in the sea, but even though the place is a vast expanse of salt water, the animation insists on inserting environments and objects that store water, such as rivers, puddles or even drinking glasses — how is that possible if the entire exterior is already filled with water?

2. Fish to drown

Another issue that escapes logic in the drawing is the fact that the fish drown, as in the episode “Salva-Vidas Bob Em Serviço” from the 3rd season of the series, where, while SpongeBob is in charge of lifeguards at the Goo Lagoon beach, one of the locals ends up drowning while swimming.

The situation gains even more depth if taken into reality, since there really is no way for a fish to drown, as explained by the biologist and aquarist jonathan alves in an interview given to the Vida de Bicho portal by Editora Globo, which states that yes, the animal can die in the water, but only in those that do not have the ideal amount of oxygen because they do not allow the respiratory system to function properly, and not because drowning.

3. The Goo Lagoon beach

The underwater beach called Goo Lagoon is the stage for some of the cartoon’s adventures, even if its existence is somewhat strange. In addition to having a sea inside the ocean, the fact that fish can swim in the place and sunbathe underwater is beyond common logic.

4. Underwater fire

In several episodes of the animation, the characters create bonfires to cook food or just to warm up. But isn’t it strange that they can create flames underwater so easily?

5. Mrs. Puff dream about Patrick without having met him

Mrs. Puff is the central figure of the episode “Doing Time”, where she ends up behind bars after SpongeBob makes a mistake during a driving test, counting on the help of the yellow sponge and Patrick to try to have her freedom again.

However, it is revealed that it was all just a nightmare for the character, so, like Mrs. Puff could have dreamed about the starfish if she hadn’t met Patrick before that dream?
