5 differences between live-action and animation

There are some differences between the animation and the live-action of ‘The Little Mermaid’. Find out what they are!

The live-action “The Little Mermaid” finally hit theaters this Thursday, the 25th. The feature, which is a remake of Disney’s classic 1989 animation, features Halle Bailey in the lead role, in addition to other big names in the cast, such as Melissa McCarthy, Jonah Hauer-King, Jacob Trembaly, Javier Bardem It is Awkwafina. Remember the trailer!

As with all Disney live-action, there are minor changes between the animation and the new version. Some of the changes did not affect the story directly, while others even answered questions that the animated version ended up generating in fans.

Therefore, RECREIO brought some of the main changes from the live-action of “A Pequena Sereia”; check out!

SPOILER ALERT!

1. Ariel’s Sisters

In both animation and live-action, King Triton has seven daughters — but each version of this story presents Ariel’s sisters in a different light. In the cartoon, all the daughters of the king of the seas have names that start with the letter A, and we don’t know much more than that about these characters.

In live-action, each of Ariel’s sisters represents one of the seven seas. In addition, the characters’ names also changed, leaving only the protagonist with the initial A. Now, Triton’s daughters are called Caspia, Indira, Karina, Mala, Perla and Tamika. The sirens were interpreted, respectively, by Nathalie Sorrell, Simone Ashley, Kajsa Mohammar, Karolina Conchet, Lorraine Andrea It is sienna king.

Another difference that is related to Ariel’s sisters is the song they sang at the beginning of the animation, which was left out of the remake. The song entitled “Daughters of Triton” was one of the first in the film, and featured the daughters of the sea king. In the live-action, the viewer meets the mermaids through a meeting that Triton has with his daughters, and this moment is known as the Coral Moon.

Remember the song “Daughters of Triton”!

2. The deal with Úrsula

In the animation, the moment when Ariel closes the deal with Ursula to become human raised a bit of doubt among fans. That’s because the mermaid signed a contract, to sign the agreement between her and the sea witch. That way, many began to wonder: if she knew how to write, why didn’t she write a note to Eric telling the whole truth?

This doubt ended up being resolved in the live-action, since, when Úrsula proposes the agreement with Ariel, she wants to make a blood pact, that is, the mermaid had to tear a scale from her tail in order to sign the agreement. In this way, she shows that she doesn’t know how to write and that she couldn’t talk to Eric through notes.

But it’s not just the way the deal was struck that changed between live-action and animation. When Ursula imposes the conditions for Ariel to become human, she does not give up only her voice, but all her siren abilities, as well as the charm that is described at the beginning of the film to attract men. The villain even adds one more detail to the agreement without the protagonist knowing: Ariel does not remember that she needs to kiss Eric to remain human, which makes Sebastião and Sabidão help the mermaid more than ever to try to win a kiss from the prince.

3. Eric’s Family

Have you ever wondered where Eric’s parents were in the animation? Because in the live-action we know Queen Selina, the mother of the prince, played by the actress Noma Dumezweni. Check out the released image of the character!

And there’s one more detail: in the new version, Eric is adopted. That’s because the Queen, along with her husband, who has already passed away in history, found Eric on the beach after a shipwreck that happened near the cliff. The couple decided to take in and raise the child as a son, and so Eric ended up becoming a prince.

4. Ariel more empowered

Some iconic moments from the animation were not played by Ariel. Among them, we have the moment when Sabidão and other animals try to prevent Eric’s marriage to Vanessa, the human version of Ursula, in addition to the final battle, where the prince is responsible for killing the villain.

In the live-action, things change and Ariel becomes the main protagonist of these moments, being responsible for breaking Ursula’s necklace and showing Eric the truth, murdering the sea witch while commanding a ship.

5. Change of region

Many fans believe that Disney’s animation takes place in Denmark, even if this information has never been confirmed by the studio. One of the reasons for this suspicion is because the story was based on the tale of Hans Christian Andersen, a Danish author. However, in 2019, Mickey Mouse’s house published a video on the YouTube channel “Disney Princess” confirming that “The Little Mermaid” is set in Italy, and that Ariel grew up in the Mediterranean Sea.

The live-action takes place in the waters of a fictional island in the Caribbean. In addition to revealing the new location of the story on its official website, Disney also confirmed that the plot takes place in the 1830s.
