Danny Roberts became the public face of the LGBTQ rights movement 22 years ago when he was one of seven compatriots to appear on MTV’s “Real World: New Orleans.”
While Roberts may no longer be one of the few openly gay on TV, his participation in the show Revealed LGBTQ community members faces many challenges in 2022.
HuffPost reviewed this week’s episode of “The Real World Homecoming: New Orleans,” in which Roberts struggles to talk about his sexuality. Matt Smith.
“God created each one of us,” Smith, a devout Catholic, told Roberts. “I will never understand how God created you.”

True to form, Roberts takes the awkward confrontation seriously.
“I call it spiritual bypass: the idea of sinner’s love, the hatred of sin,” he explains. “This is where most of the world is now. It’s a place where a big part of my family is, and I call it our ‘don’t ask, don’t tell me’ policy.
This is a fitting analogy given to Roberts ’real life in the original“ Real World: New Orleans ”. A boy friend of an army officer once had Whose face needs to be dark in order not to lose his job on the “Don’t ask me, don’t tell me” policy, which has explicitly banned LGBTQs from military service since 1994 until 2011.
Now 44, Roberts lives in Vermont with 6 -year -old daughter Naia and works as a technician. Despite his initial reservations, he said filming “Real World Homecoming: New Orleans” proved to be a “redemptive” experience.
“None of us as individuals are people who thrive on drama or seek it out,” he told HuffPost in April. “Our goal was the opposite: we had just arrived in New Orleans and were reunited with our old friends. “Most of us haven’t met in 20 years.”
