Coming out, the weight of fame, anxieties… Unfiltered interview with Angel facing the Papotins

Report. – After Virginie Efira, Camille Cotin or Gilles Lelouch, it was the turn of the famous translator. Rock your what! to meet the Papotins, these “journalists” with autistic disorders. Exchanges to reveal this Saturday night on France 2, to which Madame Figaro was able to be present behind the scenes.

A few weeks ago, Angel performed on stage at Coachella in a crystal bra and skirt. Here he is this Saturday, May 20, on France 2, facing the Papotins, these “atypical journalists” who have been interviewed since 1990 and for several months on television. During these matches, the rules of the game are clear. “You can say anything Papotin, but, above all, anything can happen”, as the editor-in-chief of the paper edition, psychologist Julien Bancillon, always likes to remind before Angel, who is still in the reserve. Somewhat intimidated by the fifty ‘reporters’ with autism spectrum disorders he meets for the first time. That is the goal, by the way. “In Angele we can clearly see that, there is a questioning, a certain apprehension when starting the show,” notes the show’s producer Clément Chauvin. We try to preserve this giddiness of the meeting as much as possible, and that is why the guest meets the Papotins only at the last moment.

Behind the scenes of Sequins

Smothered in “Love, Hate and Danger” in his white T-shirt, Angel barely settles into his seat when the questions are already flowing; “How old are you: When is your birthday ? Can I call you by your name? (…) You are married ? Do you prefer that I address you or you? What is your last name? Are you French or not?” Arno bombards the entry of one of the deans of the Papotins.

The interrogation continues. “Rock your what!, is it an angry song? I would suspect that you would use it against something harmful, when men are interested in the butt…” Etienne begins. The Belgian’s answer. “It’s a song that’s a serious observation. that women, long ago and still today, are not respected, and that we do not listen to them.”

There are many people who have a hard time with this because we are led to believe that it will last forever

Angela

About social media and its distractions (at the center of her 2021 sophomore album, Ninety fiveMatthias asks him. “Yes, all the time. What I call my demons are my anxieties, my fears, my insomnia… And until we face them, we can’t really get rid of them,” the young woman automatically replies. What does he think about during these long nights? “I think a lot about my work and what it causes me in terms of harm or hardship: fear of being publicized, of being criticized, of being in danger, of the people around me by my choice not to be anymore. inspired… My insomnia is as if all my anxieties were crying out at once.” His anxiety, he says, is rooted in media hype. Also out of fear of no longer being successful, of returning to anonymity. “Sometimes I’m afraid that people will forget me, that people will lose interest, from being at the plate, from being stingy. I’m afraid of getting old, of being funny, of being laughed at. And at the same time, if it happens one day, that’s life. You have to accept that everything only lasts for a while and that one day I might be old-fashioned and that’s okay (…) There are a lot of people who have a bad life in this job because we’re made to believe, that it will be forever. And sometimes it’s just fleeting.

When privacy is stolen

As addictive as it is, fame is not inconsequential. The impact on privacy is everywhere. “My personal life, unlike my professional life, I can’t always control,” admits the multi-award-winning singer, who has no less than 3.7 million subscribers on Instagram. We think he stole Cyril Hanuna in 2019. In his show Touche pas à mon poste, the presenter revealed that Angel found love in the arms of actress Marie Papillon.

“This shouldn’t be a topic anymore,” says the translator your queen, a CD of same-sex love, facing the Papotins. It was difficult because I didn’t want to spread my personal life and limit it, that [Marie Papillon, NDLR], revealed. Me, I made a choice to be a singer and compromise (…) For some time I have been doing everything to protect people who have not asked for anything. That’s why Angel gets in touch when asked if she’s in a relationship today. “I learned to keep it a secret.” On the other hand, he readily admits that he is “pansexual”. “I can fall in love with a boy, a girl, a non-binary person, a transgender person. I don’t choose who I fall in love with, I just fall in love with someone,” he sums up. “But why didn’t you tell your grandma right away that you were bisexual,” Rudy said later. “Already, because I didn’t know it immediately, the Belgian reflected. Years can pass between what we feel and what we admit to ourselves. I waited until I was 23 to admit to myself that I was really in love with a girl (…) So I didn’t want it to be a secret anymore. At first, when I was a kid, I didn’t necessarily want to address the feelings I had for girls because I felt like it wasn’t normal.”

Zero tongue in cheek

At the end of these three hours without waffle service (only 30 minutes are broadcast on the screen), Angel comes out excited. Restless but calm. “This program very much questions our relationship with others, with people,” explains producer Clément Chauvin. Psychologist Julien Bancillon, who hosts and distributes each talk, agrees. “That is the strength of the Papotins. Since there is no ulterior motive or unhealthy curiosity with them, the guest gradually opens up, as happened with Angel, who I found intelligent and generous. And finally, although they bear a difference that we notice quite quickly, we perceive a very strong similarity through their exchange.
