The hairstylist maestro handled the hair design for the film Joan Barry by Maïwenn, screened at the opening of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Secrets of extraordinary filming.
Madame Figaro: How was your collaboration with Maïwenn?
John Nollett .- Superbly good. I worked in absolute osmosis with Maïwenn. He inspired me so much and I loved this shoot.
How Maiwen chose to interpret Jeanne du Barry “capillary» ?
John Nolet: The director’s vision was to show that Jeanne du Barry imposed her naturalness on the king’s court. She was an influential woman in her time. In the film, she wears her hair, while no woman has ever shown herself like that. It’s not historical fact, but Maiven wanted to stay close to her real-life appearance.
In other words.
This easy cut, slightly tousled, with very elaborate hair texture. It’s also a style ingrained in my DNA. We just added accessories like a hat or veil to signify the era. Maïwenn also wanted real expertise from the world of fashion.

You created the hairstyles Johnny Depp for the saga Pirates of the Caribbean . How was the reunion?
It was the second time we worked together and it was great. I was very happy to find him. He is a man who has immense respect for the artists who help him build his role, from clients to makeup artists and hair stylists… He is a very good creative partner, he is so patient. When we touch him and like the result, his gaze wakes up. We see that he immediately put his character in place.
Madame Figaro: What was the director’s motto for the king’s hairstyles?
John Nolet: Also natural looking. At times, Maiwen wanted Louis XV to wear an overly regal appearance due to circumstances. For others, he wanted us to reinterpret the hairstyles of his era as a bit of controlled nonsense.

Where did you get the inspiration to create all the spectacular hairstyles in the film?
I went to the Louvre, I watched period movies, I looked on Pinterest… I looked everywhere. At the start of the shoot, I went to Maison Lemarié to raid their silk flowers, embellishments, beads and brooches. I brought strands of hair to the feather maker to create feathers of the same color. I caught him like the apple of my eye.
Recreating these extravagant period hairstyles must have given you a hard time…
It works! In the 18th century, the French took very bad care of their hair, and it was the wigs that distinguished their individuality. We did some real architectural work with wigmaker Audrey Borka from A&R Workshop. I have enhanced hairstyles with horse hair inside. It also happened to me to make sculptures of volumes resting on the “foundations” of buildings. Sometimes, with one look, we put on two or three wigs. They are very sculpted, drawn, we had to feel a “stroke of a pencil”.

The hairstyle that impressed you the most?
The one that required my most attention and time was the Countess du Barry during the famous scene where she is introduced in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. We recreated it in a much more elegant and subtle way than the original. It took me a day and a half of work and almost three wigs had to be matched to keep it all “volatile”. Furthermore, the real du Barry is said to have arrived late to the event due to her hairdresser…

Which characters did you choose to style?
I had a lot of fun styling King Louis XV’s two scornful daughters, Adelaide (performed by India Hair, Ed) and Victory (Susan de Beek, editor’s note). Hair is a capillary story. In every appearance, they wear hairstyles that say something about their personality. Unlike other characters, they have very large, slightly exaggerated volumes. In order to emphasize their personality traits, I had the idea to match the color of their clothes to the color of their hair.

Karita sisters also created hairstyles for movies…
Indeed, they created the characters of the film in particular Who are you Polly Maggoo?, Out of breathor Donkey skin. Furthermore, I recently learned that Marie-Antoinette’s wigmaker Leonard was also based at 11 Faubourg Saint-Honore. (Address of Maison de beauté Carita, artistic director John Nolet, editor’s note). It’s crazy! Everything is connected. Marie Antoinette swore by him because he created incredible hair creations for her. The headdress was indeed one of the strongest pieces of jewelry that contradicted the period. Nothing was too extravagant.

Best moment you had on set?
On the very first day, in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, when Maiwen arrives as Jeanne du Barry and Johnny Depp as King Louis XV. There were 200 to 400 extra people in the room. I can assure you that this is a defining moment.

It’s been twenty-seven years since you worked on a period film… How did it feel?
The last one really happened Ridiculous By Patrice Legrue (1996, editor’s note) Maiven inspired me with her vision and her script. He awakened in me my passion and my desire to try again. I learned a lot, for example that during the reign of Louis XV, women used a mixture of sugar, water and honey to hold their hair with the effect of permanently attracting bees… I wish it was good to study film too. It’s set in the Middle Ages or the 1930s, and if someone offered me a Hollywood version of Cleopatra, I’d run.
