Despite having the same characters, there are big differences between ‘Maleficent’ and ‘Sleeping Beauty’; find out which ones!
In 1959, Disney released ‘Sleeping Beauty’, an animation that brings the fairy tale that tells the story of a princess — who here receives the name of Aurora — victim of a curse cast by an evil sorceress that makes her enter a eternal sleep after pricking your finger on a spinning wheel, for the big movie screens.
The story has as one of its most recent live-action adaptations the feature film ‘Maléficent’, which came out in 2014, addressing details that precede the story that is already widely known. Even so, as it is an adaptation, there are some differences between the two films, as pointed out by the Screenrant portal; check out some of them below:
1. Around whom the perspective the plot develops
In animation, the plot that brings Aurora on the scene for just 18 minutes, is guided by Maleficent’s perverse desires, striving to portray her as a cruel and emotionless villain who is willing to cast a powerful spell against a baby, as a way to revenge for not being invited to the princess’s christening.
Meanwhile, in the story that brings the sorceress in flesh and blood played by the actress Angelina Joliethe plot forms a little differently, since here, her attitudes against humans are justified in a much more sensitive way, since the only man she met and fell in love with betrayed her and stole her wings.
2. Who is the big antagonist
Unlike the feature released in the late 50s, the live-action does not feature Maleficent as the great villain, but King Stefan, Aurora’s father. This is because, the character, who is lived by the actor Sharlto Copleyhas the most cruel and selfish action of the entire plot.
In history, Stefan was just a peasant who worked in the castle, until he discovered that he could change his future if he took Maleficent’s wings to the king, since the feat would make anyone worthy to succeed the throne. Thus, he betrays Maleficent’s trust and steals her wings, achieving his wish: to become a member of royalty.

3. Aurora and Maleficent’s relationship
In the 2014 feature film, Maleficent and Aurora become extremely close, something that does not happen in animation. In the film, Maleficent watches Aurora grow up and admires who the girl becomes, in addition, the young princess always describes the sorceress as her “fairy godmother”.

4. The Fight against the Dragon
The final fight of ‘Sleeping Beauty‘, features Maleficent transforming into a giant dragon to stop Phillip from getting close to Aurora and breaking the curse.
In ‘Maléficent’, the battle takes place in a different way. Taking the form of a dragon is Maleficent’s loyal servant, Diaval, who can assume different forms at her command. He attacks King Stefan’s guards, helping Philip reach the chamber where Aurora is sleeping and break the curse.

5. The kiss that breaks the curse
Just like in animation, in the flesh and blood plot, the curse can also be broken if the princess receives a kiss from true love. However, in the live-action it is not Prince Phillip who achieves the feat, but Maleficent, as she has developed a real love for her goddaughter.
