This Thursday, the 4th, is celebrated Stay Wars Day, or simply Star Wars Day, the date responsible for celebrating one of the biggest franchises in pop culture, created by George Lucas, and first released in 1977. But how did that date come about? And why is it celebrated on May 4th?
Origin
Many may not know, but it wasn’t that long ago that Star Wars Day came about. The first time the date was celebrated took place in 2011, during a fan meeting held in the city of Toronto, Canada, as reported by the Canal Tech portal.
Since then, the celebration has become increasingly famous among fans of the franchise, who have decided to adopt the celebration every year. The fame of Star Wars Day was so great that even Star Wars itself lucasfilmthe producer responsible for the saga, decided to adopt the date in 2012.
Now, to mark this very important day, every year Disney and Lucasfilm prepare numerous online and offline actions dedicated exclusively to the day that honors Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, and all famous characters from the Star Wars universe.
But why May 4th?
The date for the celebrations was not chosen by accident. Throughout the franchise, one of the phrases that is repeated the most, and has become a landmark of the saga, is “May the force be with you”, which translated into English is “May the force be with you”.
In this way, the fans decided to make a small pun with the beginning of the phrase, which is similar to “May 4th”, the 4th of May in Portuguese. Thus, the phrase would be “May the Fourth be with you”, that is, “May the Fourth be with you”.
However, the first time the phrase was used was in a political situation, and not just in celebration of the franchise. According to Disney, the case occurred in 1979, when an article in the British newspaper The London Evening News congratulated the victory of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister by using the headline “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”, in free translation, “May the fourth of May be with you, Maggie. Congratulations!”.
