The Dante Project, Journey to Heaven
The Royal Ballet in Dante project 2021 ROH. Andrei Ouspensky
British dancer and choreographer Wayne McGregor is interested in all performing arts, music, dance, film, video, painting… But also science and technology. He founded his company in 1992, and in 2008 he became the resident choreographer of the Royal Ballet of London. For a long time he wanted to adapt. Divine Comedy About Dante, a huge project he worked on and reworked. The first part presents a 3-act version in Los Angeles and London in 2021. A version that will be cut and entered the repertoire of the Paris Opera with house dancers. Less dark than Dante’s visions, Wayne McGregor takes us through Hell, which he calls Pilgrimage, Purgatory, which becomes a gentle monastery, and Paradise. But this journey to the end of Hell is dominated by Dante’s love for Beatrice, the sky brightens. Tacita Dean’s collections combine whimsy and poetry, and Dante’s frames seem to be symbolized by beautiful color projections that lend a subtle softness to Purgatory. In this ballet with neoclassical forms, Wayne McGregor slips beautiful flashes and lyricism that takes us to the seventh heaven.
