‘Monstros Inc’ was supposed to have a completely different story; find it out!

The original ‘Monsters, Inc.’ narrative would not have Boo, James Sullivan or Mike Wazowski; see what it would look like!

Coming to theaters in 2001, ‘Monstros Inc.’ is the disney and Pixar directed by Pete Doctor, Kelsey Mann, Dan Scanlonwhich starred James Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, and became the first cartoon from both studios to be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animation category, competing in 2002 against ‘Jimmy Neutron’ and ‘Shrek’, the big winner of that year .

The plot shows Sullivan and Wazowski as workers at the scare factory ‘Monstros Inc. unique one-dimensional city where they and other monsters live.

The work of the pair of friends was going well, since Sullivan was considered the scariest of all the monsters in the company, until on a certain day, the little girl that the duo should scare, ends up going through the portal, entering the factory and bringing chaos to Monstropolis, since there, they believe that humans are toxic and could lead to death.

Still, the little human’s chaotic visit ends up not only changing how Monsters Inc works in the end, as they discover that laughter is more potent than screams, but also providing one of the cutest friendships in animation, as Sullivan has a huge affection for the girl, giving her the nickname Boo.

But, what some may not know, is that the animation story was originally thought to follow totally different characters and dynamics, as revealed by the co-director of the plot, Pete Doctoron Jeff Goldsmith’s Creative Screenwriting Magazine podcast, as reported by Gizmodo in 2009 (via Screenrant).

In the first version, the protagonist would be an adult man who lived somewhat unhappy. Things begin to unravel when he ends up receiving a visit from monsters that he had drawn in childhood, where each one of them would represent some difficulties that arose when he was little, but that he should have to make an effort to overcome.

Thus, as these fears were overcome, the monsters would leave, symbolizing the change in the character’s life:

Well, my idea was that this is a 30-year-old man who is like an accountant or something, and he hates his job. One day he gets a book with some drawings he made as a child, and without thinking, he puts it [o desenho] on the shelf and that night, monsters appear. No one else can see them. He thinks he’s starting to go crazy. They follow him to his work, and on his dates, and all that — it turns out these monsters are fears he never dealt with as a kid. Each of them represents a different type of fear. As he conquers these fears, the guys he slowly becomes a friend of sorts – they disappear once he overcomes these fears. It’s this kind of bittersweet ending where they leave, and not a lot of it remains.” doctor.
