The exhibition Daily pictures presents 300 works by the internationally recognized designer and explores all the techniques of this art. A pure delight of form and color to discover at the Hôtel des Arts in Toulon. On that occasion, he took part in our “autopromo” interview game.
Since when have I been drawing?
I have no memory of not drawing. I feel like I’m always holding a pencil or a stick to draw lines and cover surfaces with color. Living in a small village in Brittany, I managed to find alternatives to boredom. Play tennis on the wall, football, paint. the triple suited me.

“I like to paint what I can get my hands on”
Why is painting synonymous with freedom for me?
Drawing does not require special training. It is one of the purest artistic subjects. It’s a bit like a dance, a choreography. It’s also a practice that can be had anywhere. Create with almost nothing, no protocol. I love to paint with anything I can get my hands on. I steal a lot of pencils… The same goes for the media, a tablecloth in a restaurant, a paper napkin on a TGV, bags in an airplane seat pocket.
Drawing vs Design.
The sketch was also my companion. A sketch is a relationship between what we imagine and the fact of putting it on paper. If we think about a chair, we must understand its architecture. Scribble, improve. sketch is a great tool for this. I spent long days in the workshop producing notebooks of the assembly curves of the chair leg and table top. These are research sketches, while others are sketches without design.
Out of the 300 drawings I’ve featured, which one is my favorite?
The problem is rather to create a form of coherence, of uniqueness. I am very indecisive in my work in general, as a designer as well as a visual artist. All the same, it seems to me that this exhibition of drawings is preserved. Among the thousands of drawings I made, it was necessary to sort. We, our assistants, made a casting of drawings. That said, I have enjoyed using felt for about fifteen years. The color with the markers is already there. It is about going faster. i love this sensuality.
The value of the creator is that it can be a long-term part
Ronan Bourulec
The question I am afraid of.
“What is the best picture or subject of my career?” Because I have no idea. I guess it’s not that hard to get a chair one day in your life. And he can be great. It can make a man or woman a recognized creator. But the value of a creator is the ability to be in the long run. As for actors, you have to know how to develop. I work in many different contexts. For example, in Japan, with artisans who are living masters. And next week I’m trying to find a solution to produce a chair at the cheapest price with a large machine from this craftsman’s workshop. The profession of a designer is a profession of compassion.
“Since high school, it’s been like driving a train that runs at a constant speed without a hitch”
Do I still have the holy fire?
I had the opportunity at the age of 15 to enroll in the applied arts department in high school. I felt reborn. I realized that this was going to be my life. Since then, I seem to have gone on a train that runs at a constant speed without a hitch.
Is there a particular project that is close to my heart?
A small chapel from the 16th centurye, Saint-Michel de Brasparts, in the mountains of Arrée. It’s a very iconic place in Brittany, a misty, wild place for miles around. Francois Pinault has decided to finance the renovation of this site. He asked me to design the liturgical furniture. I envisioned an altar that looks like a mirror at the back of the choir.
Is there a misunderstanding about me?
That my brother and I have a house on a Cycladic island. I occasionally post photos of the sea, but these were taken in Finisterre.
