Shields details the filming of the kiss scene in her Hulu documentary, also called “Pretty Baby,” which was released earlier this month. In the documentary, Shields says he struggled while filming the intimate scene and that the film’s director, Louis Malle, was numbed by his suffering. Shields says she kept scowling in disgust during each outing, for which Malle scolded her.
Eventually, Carradine called a fight, pulled Shields aside, and calmed her down by telling her she was “faking it” and “making it up” — which was exactly what she needed to get through the scene.
“This is unavoidably real,” Wilson continued. “And the impact of that is also real. Brooke, 11, expressed her discomfort while filming this moment, but that discomfort was not taken seriously by the director.”
