While Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s recent breakup may have shocked Swift fans, it wasn’t all that “dramatic,” according to People.
A source close to the singer told the publication that tthe split was largely caused by “personality differences”.
The source said that Swift and Alwyn “have had some rough times before and have always worked things out, so the friends thought they would take time apart but eventually get back together.”
However, after six years, it was clear they “were not meant for each other,” the source told People.
The split reportedly took place a few weeks ago. Representatives for Swift and Alwyn did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment.
People said they were “talking about marriage just a few months ago.”
According to People, Swift and Alwyn first started dating in 2016. When the 2020 pandemic hit, the source said, they stuck together, allowing their relationship to grow in isolation.
In addition to romance, the pair collaborated on two of her albums, ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’. Alwyn, an actor and songwriter, won a Grammy for his role in 2021, and Swift gave him a shout-out the same year after winning the Grammy for Album of the Year.
Swift previously said that her song “Lavender Haze” best describes how the relationship felt.
“When you’re in the ‘lavender fog’ you’ll do anything to stay in it and not let people pull you out of that cloud,” she said in an Instagram post, noting how she and Alwyn have had to protect their relationship. from the outside world.
“We had to avoid the weird rumors, the tabloid stuff and just ignore it,” the singer continued. “And so this song is about ignoring those things to protect the real things.”
In one of the few times Alwyn has spoken publicly about the romance, he explained that he didn’t want it to be guarded and secret, but felt he had no other choice.
“We live in an increasingly intrusive culture. … The more you give—and honestly, even if you don’t—something will be taken away.
But People’s source said that because of their pandemic privacy, Alwyn didn’t really “get to know” Swift outside the bubble and they’ve been “broken up” ever since.
However, don’t expect Swift’s next album to be full of anti-Alwyn songs.
“They’re friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe,” the insider told People. “They’ve broken up. Taylor is very focused on her tour right now.”
