On Sunday, April 9, Buckingham Palace published new information about the course of the celebrations. The distance covered by the march has been significantly shortened.

Followers of the royal family will potentially have to “camp the day before” in order to hope to catch a glimpse of the sovereign. Buckingham Palace on Sunday, April 9, indeed revealed new details of the coronation of Charles III, scheduled for May 6. Chamber officials, in particular, emphasized that the march will take a shorter route, and that is for “practical reasons”. It will leave Buckingham Palace through the central gate and pass under Admiralty Arch before passing through Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and Parliament Street to Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony will begin at 11am.

A route that Charles III and his wife Camilla would take there and back, which should allow the public to see them twice. The only downside is that this route is only part of the route taken by Elizabeth II at her own coronation in 1953. The palace has omitted large sections of the route, which may punish some Britons who want to admire the royal procession. The latter, however, will be able to console themselves by watching the event on giant screens in the United Kingdom, namely in Bristol Cathedral, Cardiff Castle and Belfast City Hall.

On the outward journey, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will ride in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach, which was built for Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. Built in Australia and first used in 2014, the six-horsepower car is equipped with air conditioning, heating and electric windows. On the return trip, the couple will travel the other way in the traditional Gold State Coach, a 260-year-old golden carriage that transports British sovereigns to major events.

For her own coronation, Elizabeth II traveled in the “Gold State Coach”. An experience he described as “terrible” due to the lack of comfort in the car. On the outward journey, its journey was 2.5 kilometers and took two hours, so that as many Britons as possible could see the procession. During the ceremony, the sovereign was also presented with a golden scepter on a cross and a second one on an ivory dove, which this time will return to Queen Camilla.

St. Edward’s Crown

The coronation of Charles III will also be marked by the creation of a special emoji on Twitter. “A new emoji based on St. Edward’s crown has been introduced to celebrate the coronation. It will appear on Twitter when certain keywords are used,” Buckingham said in a statement. This is one of the British Crown Jewels, which is exclusively reserved for the coronation of monarchs.

This is not the first time that emojis have been created for royal celebrations. In honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee in June 2022, an emoji in the shape of a corgi, the sovereign’s beloved dog breed, appeared on Twitter. Three days of festivities are planned for the coronation of Charles III from Saturday, May 6. After Saturday’s ceremony, Britons are invited to gather on Sunday for traditional neighborhood picnics. Monday is a public holiday, the palace invites residents to an associative activity.
