On April 14, 2022, Mattel announced that after 57 years of creating the first astronaut Barbie, the amazing doll finally traveled to space to carry out the DreamStar Mission. The experience became possible after a partnership between the company and the National Laboratory of the International Space Station (ISS).
Sending not one, but two Barbie dolls to orbit Earth since February of this year, the project is designed to motivate girls to pursue careers in STEM by showcasing dozens of possible careers in aerospace, science, technology, engineering and math. .
Furthermore, in an interview with collectSPACE, Lisa McKnightexecutive vice president and global head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel Group, said, “Barbie has a long history with space exploration, having introduced an astronaut doll in 1965, before humans even set foot on the moon, so the idea of Barbie going for space has been at the top of mind for a long time.”
The doll duo also participated in a class guided by the American astronaut Kayla Barrona member of the Expedition 67 crew who introduced and explained some of the research carried out in the orbiting laboratory such as the Veggie Garden, and the Station’s free-floating robots, which are named Astrobees.
The dolls, which are part of the new Space Discovery line, also entered the ISS’s multi-window dome, and had their experience documented in the special episode “DreamStar Mission — Let’s Go to Space!” from the video series “You can be everything”. Check out!
It is worth remembering that, after the conclusion of the mission between the months of June and August, the Barbies were donated to the Smithsonian Institute National Air and Space Museum, and also started to be exhibited at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy museum, in Virginia, USA in end of the year.
