Understand why Mulan is considered a Disney princess even without being born into royalty
In 1998, Disney introduced its new princess: Mulan. The plot, inspired by an ancient Chinese poem, tells the story of a girl who takes the place of her elderly father, and infiltrates the army to fight China, where she ends up becoming a great heroine.
Despite not being the daughter of a monarch, and also not having married someone from royalty, the character joined the select group of princesses, which today also comprises 12 other famous names: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel , Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana. But why does this happen?
disney rules
As echoed by the ScreenRant portal, due to the large number of characters in its catalog, Disney had to elaborate some rules to decide who would be qualified to be part of the princess franchise. In total, characters must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Be part of an animation
- Being human, or at least half human
- Being born a princess, marrying royalty, or committing a heroic act
- Be the lead in your own movie, as long as it’s not a sequel
- Give a good economic return to the studios
In her film, Mulan steals her father’s armor to go to war, in addition to saving the Emperor’s life after the invasion of the villain Shan Yu and his army in the imperial palace, ridding China of a terrible blow. For this reason, thanks to her great bravery and commendable heroic act — in addition to the enormous success of the production among the public — the studio included her in the select group.
Despite this, “Mulan” also occupies another important position within Disney, as it is the first princess to have its story inspired by a legend presented through an ancient Chinese poem called “The Ballad of Hua Mulan”, dating from the 6th century.
