Luna, dad. – Pennsylvania Deputy Governor John Fetterman won the Democratic primary in Tuesday’s election for the U.S. Senate seat at the Pennsylvania Open, thus launching a general election campaign that could define control over the U.S. Senate.
Fetterman, a former mayor known for his tall stature, bald head and casual attire, defeated Conor Lamb and state spokesman Malcolm Kenyatta for his party nomination.
His success was a victory of personal branding, populist messages and ideological flexibility in the power of democratically elected party officials and leaders, who widely sided with Lamb.
Feterman also suffered a medical accident at the last minute. On Friday he had a stroke so he was not in the hospital in the last days of the campaign.
“It appears that Patterman can communicate on both sides of the political arena,” said Joseph Disarro, professor of political science at Washington and Jefferson College. “It’s a setback for a regular democratic institution.”
Fetterman, who underwent surgery Tuesday to place a pacemaker defibrillator, was not present at the election night party at the Pittsburgh Airport Hotel. The campaign was signed by Feterman supporters in support of the stance.
Fetterman’s wife, Gisele Barreto Fetterman, received a nomination on her behalf and impressed more than 100 fans.
