Discover more about the history of Mickey Mouse’s best friend, the clumsy Goofy
Clumsy and good-natured, Goofy is Mickey Mouse’s best friend. The character, who is a Bloodhound dog (like Pluto), has become one of the indispensable figures in the stories of Mickey’s gang over the years, winning the hearts of the public and even starring in his own plots.
However, the road to success was long, and it had some modifications to embrace the personality and look of “Max’s father” until he became the figure known today. With that in mind, RECREIO has gathered below everything you need to know about the origin of Goofy. Check out!
The creation
walt disney created Goofy after listening to a former circus clown, narrator and voice artist known as Vance “Pinto” Colvig. That’s because, the artist, who would become the official voice of the character, created a new and innovative laugh that served as inspiration for the development of the adorable dog.
Even so, Goofy is the result of the creativity of several artists, as stated by the Olhar Digital portal. Among these is Art BabbittDisney animator who was responsible for great works such as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’, ‘Pinocchio’ and ‘Fantasia’.
In addition to this, it is also possible to mention Frank Webb in the list of credits for the creation of the character, since he was responsible for the design of Goofy.
First apparition
The first time the public could see Goofy on screen is dated May 25, 1932, where the character appears as one of the extras in the animated short ‘Mickey’s Revue’, more precisely, as one of the laughing spectators of the concert conducted by Mickey.
Goofy appears with its main characteristics defined, as is the case of its unique voice and laughter and its clumsy way. Still, his look, despite being faithful to what the public currently knows, appears slightly different, as he wears prescription glasses and has a not-so-lined fur, giving an older appearance to the character.
These same characteristics can be seen in Goofy’s father, Amos Goofy, a character who was mentioned by the clumsy dog in animations and comics, but who appeared only in ‘O Point Mickey’ in 2001, according to information from the website Olhar Digital.
Different name
In his first appearances, he was called Dippy Dawg. Then he became Dippy the Goofy, until finally he became just Goofy (Goofy, in the original).
First solo story

A few years after his first appearance in a Mickey story, Goofy won his first solo narrative in ‘Goofy and Wilbur’ (Goofy and Wilbur, in Portuguese). The 1939 animated short features Goofy on a fishing trip with his best friend, Wilbur, a grasshopper.
Appearing in over 90 short films and films, Goofy’s biggest adventures include ‘Goofy: The Movie‘ (1995), ‘Goofy 2: Radically Goofy’ (2000), ‘The Goofy Gang’ (1992) and ‘Mickey, Donald and Goofy in: The Three Musketeers’ (2004), all available on Disney+.
