Can you have a full sex life after the age of 50? According to a new Ifop study conducted last January by the dating site DisonsDemain, the answer appears to be yes. The survey, which was distributed to 3,000 people, shows that 39% of 50-69 year olds are sexually active, which is a small difference to 18-24 year olds, who are only 42%. Far from drawing a line under their desires, this latter category of people would even claim that they feel much freer today than they did in their 20s.

Sex toys and dating apps
In the age of social networking, more and more seniors are using apps to meet new people more easily. “The proportion of single people (over 50, editor’s note) who could sign up for dating apps has doubled in 20 years, from 18% in 2004 to 39% in 2023. Almost half of those surveyed also say they use sex toys during their relationships.
And while more and more women now believe that “it is possible to have sex without love,” the youngest seem to be of little interest in this idea; the most sexually active single people,” the study noted.
Progress in Sweden
So this new research aims to raise awareness of the sexuality of the elderly, a topic that is still very taboo in France, although another study in 2014 found that 10% of nursing home residents were sexually active. Through documentaries and articles, however, public authorities are beginning to take hold of the subject. The “National Strategy for Sexual Health”, launched in March 2017 with a horizon of 2030, has thus set itself the task of taking better account of their sexuality.
