HBO’s “Staircase” Max, a well -researched murder case story against Michael Peterson, has proven far from the truth for the creators of the original documentary of the same name.
The eight-part crime drama, directed by Antonio Campos and starring Colin Firth and Tony Colette, is based on Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s Pibod award-winning documentary “Hagdanan.”
For more than a decade, the French director and his team tracked down Peterson, accused and then prosecuted the murder of his wife Kathleen, after he was found dead downstairs behind a house in Carolina. North in 2001.
The documentary is included in the story of the HBO Max series, which stars actors De Lestrade and his group, who now criticize the production for misrepresenting their filmmaking process.

The director said he was “cheated” because of the way his team was portrayed in the upcoming fifth installment of the series, which he says suggests they manipulated the footage in the editing room to make Peterson brighter.
“We gave up [Campos] “He wants all the access and I really trust this person,” de Lestrade said, noting that he shared archival footage, recordings and tips on campus during production. “That’s why I’m not comfortable today because I feel like I’ve been betrayed in some way.”

De Lestrade vaguely denied editing the documentary in Peterson’s favor, adding that he still didn’t know if the writer was involved in Kathleen’s death. (Peterson was released from prison after eight years, and the trial continued when it became clear that the main prosecution witness had given perjury. He later filed a statement. The HBO Max series falsely suggests that a romantic relationship between Peterson and documentary director Sophie Brune (played by Juliet Binoche) took place in the making of the film, possibly further damaging the project’s reputation.

Campos has not yet responded to the allegations, but de Lestrade and his staff are urging the director to fix the inaccuracies before Thursday’s controversial episode arrives.
Director and producer Matthew Belgitt asked Campos to drop “offensive allegations” or add a disclaimer explaining that the series was “inspired” by real-life events at the beginning of each episode.
