“And so… it’s over. After auditioning for this film when I was 18, about to turn 19, until now finishing filming amidst a pandemic when I turned 21… we finally did it… I feel so grateful to have experienced this film in all its glory,” reads the caption.
Plot
Despite being based on the short story by the Danish writer Hans Christian Andersenreleased in 1837, the new film will feature a slight change in the plot.
In the original story, the mermaid Ariel is obsessed with the surface and even though there are orders that forbid her to go near the mainland, the daughter of King Triton ends up obeying only her desire, where in the midst of a storm, she ends up climbing to the top of the water and rescuing Prince Eric, with whom he falls in love.
Thus, determined to marry the Prince, the mermaid ends up looking for Ursula, the Witch of the Sea, Ursula, who makes a magical contract with Ariel to transform her into a human and in exchange, the princess of Atlantis would give her voice to the villain.
In addition, for the transformation to be irreversible, Ariel should receive a kiss from her true love in three days and if the plan does not work out, the mermaid would be locked in the ocean as part of Ursula’s collection until the end of time.
In live-action, things will play out a little differently. According to Halle Bailey in an interview with Edition magazine (via Variety), the film will have a more modern approach, since Ariel will not dream of leaving the ocean just because she fell in love with someone from the surface.
I’m really excited for my version of the movie because we definitely change that perspective of her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy.” she wants,” explained the actress.
The changes do not end there. That’s because Ursula will not only be an evil sorceress, but she will have an even closer connection with the mermaid, since she will be Princess Ariel’s aunt, that is, King Triton’s sister.
