Ye, the artist known for several anti-Semitic remarks and formerly known as Kanye West, thanked actor Jonah Hill for helping him “be like the Jews again” in a stunning Instagram post on Saturday morning.
The rapper, who praised Nazi leader Adolf Hitler nearly four months ago, wrote that his feelings changed after seeing Hill – who was raised Jewish – in the 2012 comedy 21 Jump Street.
“No one should be angry at one or two people and turn that into hatred against millions of innocent people,” Ye wrote.
On Twitter, users criticized the post and questioned how the movie, of all things, would lead to this kind of change in mindset.
Ye’s comments come after the Anti-Defamation League released a report this week counting anti-Semitic incidents that occurred in the United States in 2022. The group counted 59 incidents that “directly referenced” Ye since October, when he began to make “numerous damages, statements of conspiracy. about the Jews”.
These included vandalism, harassment and assault, the ADL found.
Overall, the number of anti-Semitic incidents hit a record high in the United States last year, the group said, with nearly 3,700 reported.
“These data confirm what Jewish communities across the country have heard and seen firsthand and match the rise of anti-Semitic attitudes,” Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL’s executive director and country director, said in a news release for the relationship.
