“Daily Show” guest host Al Franken devoted much of his monologue Tuesday night to a single news story that “makes all the other stories kind of pointless.”
“According to the United Nations, we’re all going to die,” he said, referring to a grim new report that says climate change is advancing and the planet is likely to reach an alarming tipping point within the next decade.
Franken — a former “Saturday Night Live” writer and cast member and former Minnesota Democratic senator — saw some dark humor in the moment for people his age.
“Shout out to my baby boomers: I feel like I took the last helicopter out of Saigon, don’t I?” he joked.
He said the next UN report should not just list broad goals, but “call people individually” to compel them to act.
“They should say, ‘Gary, stop driving the car so much.’ You don’t have to visit your wife’s grave every day. She doesn’t keep track,” he said.
Franken spoke to “Daily Show” correspondent Desi Lydic, who said he is reporting on a very rosy future where the worst consequences have been avoided.
