The true story that would have inspired the scene of ‘Enchanto’

Understand what was this conflict that would have inspired a remarkable moment of Alma and Pedro in ‘Encanto’

During “Encanto”, an animation released by Disney in 2021, Alma and Pedro, the patriarchs of the Madrigal family, are forced to leave their hometown with their triplets after an armed conflict breaks out in the region. But, did this fight really happen in real life?

Although the village does not really exist, the entire film is based on Colombia, with clear references in the culture, music, habits and even clothing featured in the feature. Therefore, as stated by the ScreenRant portal, it is possible that the conflict mentioned at the end of the film was also inspired by something that happened in real life: the War of a Thousand Days.

Analyzing some details present in the production, such as the camera used for the family photo, the characters’ clothes, or even Bruno’s entertainment area inside the Casita, it is possible to say that “Encanto” takes place, approximately, in the 1990s. 1950. Thus, the period when Alma and Pedro needed to flee the war may have occurred at the same time as the War of the Thousand Days.

The conflict in question was a civil war that took place between October 1899 and November 1902, devastating Colombia and Panama, which was a department of the Republic of Colombia. During the clash, liberal and conservative groups, which were in power, faced each other to enact a decentralized or centralized government, respectively.

In all the years of conflict, countless cities and villages ended up being sacked, forcing residents to take refuge in other places — the same situation faced by Pedro and Alma during the film.

The war ended in 1902, after about 100,000 people died during the conflict, with the government winning, also resulting in the loss of Panama due to an intervention carried out by the United States.

Some theories also claim that the armed conflict present in “Encanto” may be inspired by another civil war, known as La Violencia, which took place between 1948 and 1958. However, the period in which the war takes place, and the time when Pedro and Alma fled their village do not fit.
