Why does Dona da Rua have two birthdays?

Coming into the world on March 21st, Monicaone of the characters of Mauricio de Sousa, celebrates her birthday this Tuesday, the 21st. The date that appeared in the comics to symbolize the birth of the character has already existed for six decades, so Dona da Rua turns 60 at the age of 7. See the celebration post!

However, what some may not know is that Mônica has two birthdays, the second being celebrated on March 3. He was curious to find out the reason, RECREIO tells you right below!

Monica’s second birthday

In addition to celebrating the date on which Mônica was born as the daughter of Seu Souza and Dona Luísa, the character also has a second date to celebrate her coming into the world. But this one is related to her creation as a character.

This is because Mônica had her first official appearance in a Cebolinha strip published in Ilustrada da Folha on March 3, 1963, where she gave her first rabbit. In the scene, the girl does not have any lines, but appears with her inseparable bunny Samsão — who at the time did not have a name —. Look!

The appearance of the character was still in black and white, but gained color a few months later with the creation of Folhinha, in September of that same year, where Mônica appeared with her classic little red dress.

Curiosity: As revealed by Folhinha, the character appeared even earlier in an illustration on the cover of Folha on February 11, 1963, however, it is not considered the official debut of the character, due to a small and important detail pointed out by Mauricio de Sousa: “She appeared in February, but the first rabbit is the one that counts”.

Monica’s creation

Before the short favorite of the comics appeared, there were already Cebolinha, Penadinho, Horácio, Piteco, Hiroshi, Zézinho and Chico Bento, therefore, Mônica was the first female character of mauricioand to create it, the cartoonist was inspired by Monica Spada e Sousahis own daughter.

As she was the first girl in the class, it took me almost a year to develop her. I didn’t know how a woman thought and I was inspired by my daughter”, revealed the cartoonist to Folhinha.

It is also worth mentioning that Mônica and all the Limoeiro gang remained portrayed only in newspaper strips until 1970, when the first comic book was released in May of that year by Editora Abril, under the title “Mônica e Sua Turma”.
