For several days, Iranian men, mostly students and pharmacists, pose in front of the lens with veils on their heads. A way of protesting through satire against the strict regime imposed on women in their country.
“They continue to mock the regime,” Farid Wahid, co-director of the North and Middle East Observatory and the Jean Jaures Foundation, enthused on Twitter. For several days, hundreds of photos of Iranian men wearing veils have been circulating on social networks. These citizens of all ages and backgrounds are staged at work or on the street with their heads covered in hijab, “in protest against Iran’s mandatory veil and dress code.”

Challenge and taunt
This powerful initiative is part of a wave of protest that has shaken the country since the death of Mahsa Amini. This 22-year-old woman died last September after being arrested by the morality police because of her “poorly positioned” veil. An event that caused the anger of the population and led to demonstrations. Many Iranian women in particular risked their lives by taking to the streets to burn their hijabs or cut their hair (a symbol of rebellion).
Asked FigaroFarid Wahid thus added that this post today aims to reverse the roles and show that “a man with a veil is funny and that it is the same for women.” It should be noted that wearing a veil in public space became mandatory for them in 1979, after the Islamic revolution.
“We are proud of our men”
Students, but also pharmacists, struggle to help their colleagues. Many pharmacy workers have thus posed for the camera to show their disagreement with the Iranian Food and Drug Administration (IFDA), a government agency under the supervision of the Ministry of Health. The latter recently made it mandatory for all female staff to wear the traditional veil.
“I call on pharmacists around the world to support their Iranian colleagues. Many women have lost their jobs to challenge laws requiring them to wear the veil. Forcing women to wear the hijab is an insult to all women and men around the world. Human rights are a universal topic. Show your solidarity,” Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad wrote on Twitter. A post accompanied by two photos of masked men between two shelves of drugs.
Having gone viral on social networks, the photos of these Iranians have received high praise all over the world. “We are proud of our men who stood by us in the fight for freedom,” commented the user.
