A Canadian activist is facing criminal charges after storming the stage at this week’s Juno Awards and interrupting a speech by Avril Lavigne, but she’s firmly behind the stunt in her latest remarks.
Casey “Ever” Hatherly was topless at Monday’s ceremony in Edmonton as she walked alongside the songwriter, who was introducing musician AP Dhillon at the time. The Vancouver resident had phrases such as “land back” and “stop picking up old growth now” written on her torso and arms, with paste covering her nipples. She was eventually removed by security and arrested.
On Wednesday, Hatherly appeared in an Edmonton court on mischief charges before speaking to the media outside. The activist said he belongs to an environmental advocacy group called On to Ottawa and has protested the development of natural lands in the province of Ontario.
The Juno Awards, now in their 53rd year, are Canada’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards.
In her statements to reporters, Hatherly was unapologetic.
“I know I have an incredible amount of privilege, and it’s my absolute privilege to stand up and fight for something I believe in.” she said. “The best way to do that is to play the cards I’m dealt. I have white privilege, perfect breasts and a huge ass, so I got the attention On to Ottawa needs.
At the ceremony, Lavigne appeared surprised by Hatherly’s sudden appearance on stage, but kept it cool.
“Fuck You” has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards. She said Hatherley, laughing. “Damn you bitch.”
Lavigne continued to joke about the incident later in the show, also accepting a “fan choice” award. on social networks.
