All Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai wanted was a little peace at the Oscars on Sunday. But Jimmy Kimmel’s public prank got in the way. (Watch the video below.)
During a break, the host asked Yousafzai an alleged question from a fan: “Your work on human rights and education for women and children is an inspiration. As the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, I wondered: Do you think Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine? It was a reference to an alleged incident between the “Don’t Worry Darling” co-stars at the Venice Film Festival (which Pine denied).
“I’m only talking about peace,” Yousafzai replied.
Kimmel complimented the activist on her response. “That is why you are Malala and no one else. … The winner is Malalaland all.
Moments later, an actor in a bear costume from a comedy “Cocaine Bear” began jokingly hitting Yousafzai, who was executive producing the Oscar-nominated short film “Stranger at the Gate.”
“Cocaine bear, leave Malala alone!” Kimmel asked.
Some viewers thought Kimmel’s routine was beneath Yousafzai.
Jokes about crowdsourcing at the Oscars can be wrong. Just ask David Letterman, whose Uma-Oprah joke fell flat during the 1995 ceremony.
Twitter users who thought Kimmel’s shtick was a fluke went after him hard.
