Find out which animation made Oscar history by taking the first golden statuette in the category!
This Sunday, the 12th, the Oscar 2023 ceremony takes place, an award created to honor the best actors, technicians and films of each year, which has as one of its categories the ‘Best Animation Film’, where ‘Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro ‘, ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’, ‘Puss in Boots 2: The Last Order’, A Fera do Mar’ and ‘Red – Crescer é uma Fera’ compete for the golden statuette this year.
With that, whoever wins will become the 21st animated film to acquire the award, since, despite the first Oscar ceremony having been held in 1929, the category that rewards the animations shown on the big screen, only appeared in 2002, — the which leads us to the question: What was the first film to win the Oscar for Best Animation?
Making history
Over the years, studios like disneyPixar, Warner and DreamWorks were building a solid base of animations with fun plots, but which had layers and raised the construction of their characters, even though these animations were not recognized by the Oscar for these characteristics, but for the innovations they brought to the history of cinema.
That’s because, during most of the Oscar’s existence, the animations that received a golden statuette were those that brought some big change to the film industry, such as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and ‘Toy Story’ which were the first feature films by Disney and Pixar, released in 1927 and 1996, respectively.
In addition to them, there was still ‘Fantasia’, animation from 1940 that provided the creation of an audio reproduction system that was called ‘Fantasound System’. Even so, these films received an Honorary Oscar, as there was no proper category for awarding animated feature films.
The category of ‘Best Animation’ appeared more than 70 years after the first delivery of the golden statuettes, being idealized in 2001, and finally becoming reality in 2002, where ‘Shrek’, ‘Monsters Inc’ and ‘Jimmy Neutron’ were nominated .
There are those who say that the category only became real to recognize DreamWorks’ work with the story of the most beloved ogre of all time, so much so that the result could not be different: ‘Shrek’ was the first Oscar winner in the debut of the ‘Best Animation’ category.
