Check out 5 questionable moments in ‘Pocahontas’, Disney’s classic about a real character
In the year 1995, the walt disney pictures released its 33rd film “Pocahontas”, animation inspired by the true story of ammonutealso known as Matoakaa North American Indian born in 1596, daughter of the leader powhatan.
The film was yet another of Disney’s great successes, raising more than 346 million dollars worldwide at its box office, and receiving two Oscar awards, the most important award in cinema, in the categories of Best Musical or Comedy Score and Best Original Song, thanks to the song “Colors of the Wind”.
However, despite its huge success, the production still has some moments in its plot that don’t make much sense — and Recreio has separated 5 of them for you to check out.
1. John Smith Doesn’t Attack Pocahontas
Early in the film, John Smith states that he is willing to slaughter any foreigner who appears in front of him – but this did not happen when he met Pocahontas. On the occasion, the British even pointed his gun at her, but was so delighted with her look that he simply did not attack her.
2. Pocahontas starts speaking another language out of the blue

Even during the first meeting between Pocahontas and John Smith, the two, at first, are unable to communicate, as the Indian woman spoke only in her native language. However, after taking the British man’s hand and listening to it with her heart, the character, surprisingly, managed to speak the same language as the man.
3. Pocahontas Leap

Upon being informed by Nakoma that her father has returned, Pocahontas was on top of a huge waterfall and, to reach her friend, she decides to jump from the spot, not caring about the height. The problem is that, being a very high place, the fall should have caused, at the very least, some injury to the princess – but it did not.
4. John Smith manages to survive the trip to England

At the end of the film, John Smith returns to England injured after being hit by a bullet. As it was a ship trip, it is certain that until he arrived in British lands he remained on the boat for months injured, without all the necessary care for an injury of this severity, and even so he managed to survive. How did this happen?
5. Chief Powhatan forgives John Smith too easily

During the clash between Pocahontas’s tribe and the British, young Thomas ends up shooting Kocoum and killing the Indian, known for being a great warrior. However, John Smith ends up taking the blame, and is captured by Chief Powhatan, who sentences him to death. During the ritual to carry out her sentence, before being hit, the princess ends up protecting her beloved, encouraging peace between the two sides. What doesn’t make sense is that, after listening to the daughter’s words, the leader agrees to release him without argument.
