Nearly a year after the slap that went around the world and will forever be in Oscar history, Chris Rock spoke last weekend about what happened in a monologue in which he joked about Will Smith and his wife.
On stage and in the last minutes of the show, streamed live by Netflix, the actor assured that he did not consider himself a victim, despite what was happening in those moments when they were filming at the 2022 Oscars gala.
“It hurt? It still hurts My ear is ringing, but I’m not a victim. You will never see me cry in Oprah (Winfrey) or Gayle (King), that will never happen. I took the hit like (boxer Manny) Pacquiao,” he said.
Smith’s attack on The Rock forever marked the 83rd Academy Awards Gala. Chris Rock took to the stage at the Dolby Theater to present the award for best documentary and poked fun at Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, who publicly admitted to having alopecia, comparing it to Ridley Scott’s Lieutenant O’Neill.
After Pinkett-Smith briefly closed her eyes in annoyance, her husband got up from his seat and walked onto the stage to slap Rock.
“Many people have asked me why didn’t you do anything that night? Because I have parents, and they taught me that you can’t fight in front of white people, ”added the actor.
He jokes with Will Smith again
Of the 70 minutes of the play, which took place on a Saturday night in Baltimore and was part of a tour that the comedian is taking to several cities, Rock devoted the last 8 to performing against the actor and his wife.
As such, he confessed that he had loved Smith all his life and that “made some great movies”, but now he likes to watch Emancipation (an Apple TV movie based on the true story of a Louisiana plantation runaway slave) “to see them beat him up.”
Last August, it was reported that The Rock turned down an offer from the Hollywood Academy to present Oscar 2023which will be held March 12 in Los Angeles.
While Rock has not spoken publicly about the incident directly so far, he has included several hinting comments on several of the features he has starred in in recent months. EFE
