The Los Angeles County Supreme Court has ruled 16 years in prison former film producer Harvey Weinstein after he was found guilty of three counts of rape and sexual assault of an Italian-born model.

jury California last December found him guilty of rape, sexual penetration and “forced oral copulation” with this woman. The 70-year-old former Hollywood mogul will have to serve 16 years in prison after 20 years he has yet to serve, as a result of a trial he faced in 2020 for similar behavior.

Harvey Weinstein denied in court that he had committed any crime and asked not to be sentenced to “life imprisonment.” “I maintain that I am innocent. I have never raped or sexually abused this woman. I’ve never met her, and the fact is, she doesn’t know me. chain CNN.

The victim, who did not want to reveal her identity, also had the opportunity to speak out and assured that until the evening the producer insulted her, “she was a very happy and self-confident woman.” On December 19, 2022, the movie industry empire-maker was found guilty on three counts of abuse after a trial in Los Angeles that lasted about two months.

The producer was tried on seven counts based on allegations made by four women who were sexually assaulted between 2005 and 2013, all of whom were allegedly in Los Angeles hotel rooms. Two of them were for rape, and the other five were for sexual harassment. Weinstein was acquitted of one of the charges against him, while the jury failed to reach a plea agreement on the rest.

Weinstein spokesman Judah Engelmeier assured celebrity media. TMZ that the jury’s decision was a “cruel sentence given her age, health and the conditions of her incarceration in Los Angeles”, and argued that the woman had lied in her statements.

Harvey Weinstein harassment case

Last February, Weinstein’s defense requested a new trial against the producer from the judge in charge, Lisa B. Lench, and assistant prosecutors Paul Thompson and Marlene Martinez.

His lawyers, Alan Jackson and Mark Werksman, argued that they had evidence that they could not present during the last trial, and that if they had, they would have received a different answer from the jury. However, the request was not accepted.

A wave of accusations against Weinstein began in 2015, when some actresses began to speak out about his abuse. But Weinstein’s career collapsed only in October 2017, when an American newspaper New York Times and a few days later New Yorker revealed a history of sexual harassment by a producer over decades.

The case became the banner of the #MeToo feminist movement as it prompted dozens of artists to speak out about the movie mogul’s abuses, including famous actresses such as Uma Thurman, Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek.

His case also exposed the impunity with which men in positions of power in the industry engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior towards women.

To date, more than 80 women have charged the former producer with sex crimes and inappropriate behavior, and the convictions against him close one of the most controversial assault cases to date in Hollywood.
