Why was Betty left out of Toy Story 3?

In the “Toy Story” franchise, Betty, the porcelain sheep shepherd, is known to be Woody’s big crush. She was part of a lamp belonging to Molly, Andy’s sister, who ended up joining the boy’s toys and becoming a great friend of all.

Despite having become a character very beloved by the public during the first two films, Betty ended up being left out of the third sequel, without any prior explanation. But why did all this happen?

Betty’s Disappearance

As stated by some franchise producers, one of the main reasons why they decided not to include Betty in the third film is because she would not survive the incinerator presented in the final phase of the feature because she is made of porcelain, an extremely fragile material.

That way, not to discard it, they decided to remove it from production, declaring the doll as “lost”, and bringing it back only in “Toy Story 4”. Her saga during that missing time ended up being explained through the short film “As Aventuras de Betty”, where the shepherdess tells Woody everything she had to face alone during the events of “Toy Story 3”.

In the short, Betty says that, after leaving Andy’s house, she was donated to a little girl “who loved toys”, where she lived well, although “living in a lamp was not exciting”.

Everything started to change when the girl grew up, and she ended up being sold a few times until she ended up in a donation box, passing through a house full of students, a ship, until she ended up in an antique store, where she managed to accompany several children in one playground.

“On the playground… the kids were everywhere, playing. The time for fun was unlimited. We didn’t need the light fixture. We could be with the kids and toys again,” says Betty during the short.

Trying to get even closer to the little ones as she wanted, Betty destroys her lamp and, realizing that the store’s security system has been disabled, manages to escape with her sheep to freedom – which is exactly when she manages to meet again with Woody.

Back to Toy Story

After all this adventure, Betty returns in “Toy Story 4” where, according to the producers, the initial script stated that the feature would be a romantic comedy, focusing entirely on her relationship with the sheriff. However, the idea ended up being discarded after the writers realized that this would leave the story too human for a plot starring toys.

In this way, the story ended up being the way we know it, receiving a Betty with a completely new look, abandoning her classic dress and pink hat, to adopt a blue jumpsuit, a purple cape and a pink bow in her hair.
