A personal visit to a very select Mondain, a new Parisian address where you must be seen

Daphne Dejeux is the right name. His eclectic studio projects essentially share a common theme: a taste for staging and acting, as evidenced by his latest achievement, the interior design of Mondain, a neo-Parisian cabaret in Paris society.

For some time now, interior designer Daphne Dejo and Paris society have been making the rounds, specializing in exclusive places. “Paris Society has seen my work in the hotel industry, noted the professional, and I felt that the teams were sensitive to it. For my part, I wanted to explore more the creation of these very successful collections, especially for the night world. The collaboration materializes with Mondaine (2), this address where luxury intersects with retrograde and the spirit of celebration. Guided and private visit with Daphne Dejo (1).

Daphne Dejo, who notably designed the sets for La Marine and Babel, played the opulence card for Mondaine. Benoit Linero

The starting point

“Parisian society wanted to reinvent the cabaret universe with a festive venue inspired by the life of a 1970s girlfriend. So I created the right environment by developing the idea of a Left Bank apartment with big parties and iconic personalities. at the time when Serge Gainsbourg and Yves Saint Laurent would meet. I’ve been working on the codes of this worldliness, of excess, of luxury on the edge of tastelessness, never falling into it. This was to be done with the existing space, which was formerly the Roxie, with a two-story central staircase with two scrolls. I did not touch this structure. On the other hand, I overhauled everything from floor to ceiling. Rugs, benches, lamps, stools… It’s a complete creation. »

Floor to ceiling

Every detail of the decoration has been the subject of extreme attention. The goal? Bordering on the edge, but never diving into it. Benoit Linero

“As a starting point for the project, I chose rugs. For our two icons, Gainsbourg and Saint Laurent, I chose Gainsbourg’s bathroom on rue de Vernoy and the living room icons of Saint Laurent’s apartment in Paris. These biases served as the basis for the selection of furniture design, patterns, colors…”.

Lots of couture seating

Daphné Desjeux created eight types of banquets, many of which were inspired by Yves Saint Laurent dresses. Benoit Linero

“I designed eight types of benches. Their silhouette mainly revolves around Saint Laurent dresses. One of them, for example, is inspired by a long dress close to the body, open at the bottom, with a large oval drawn in folds in the middle of the abdomen. Another complex model has also given rise to thought. I was really taken by this spirit of housing, where references are mixed; clothes, family heirlooms, others salvaged, bargain-hunted…an accumulation of objects and furniture that don’t always belong together, and which makes it possible to return to this state. “home” place. It’s a luxurious disruption, punctuated by unexpected creations such as a bench that resembles a four-poster bed, allowing a more intimate box to be created in this vast space. I started from the principle that we need places to meet, like in an apartment. We’ve all seen a party crowd the kitchen while people dance in the living room. The bench of this bench is a bit like the kitchen. a corner where you feel safe.”

A colorful place

Daphne Dejeux dared to go 100% green in the smoking room. Benoit Linero

“The walls have been great playgrounds. For example, the smoking room is completely green. the walls are painted green, the library is green, as are all the contents. I also suggested that Parisian society be swept aside by wallpaper from another time, a bit like the wallpaper you find under paint and tapestry when you scratch the walls of a house. I find the idea of the horse chestnut flower pattern helps show that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. I also used this idea for the lampshade fabric, which has nothing to do with the rest. Leopard work from Lelièvre, Paon fabric from Nobilis, plum and red-toned velvet from Dedar, which is also the iconic fabric of the site… There are also, textile-wise, references galore.”

The spirit of accumulation

Objects everywhere bring a domestic dimension to the place. Benoit Linero

“To me, hoarding symbolizes the 1970s, the carefree opulence of the glorious thirties. In my opinion, the girlfriend of this period has too much jewelry, clothes… This “too much”, we find in the paintings, photographs, engravings displayed on the walls… There are 180 in total, which mainly represent women. Above the bar, books and objects mingle lavishly. An abundance of fabrics, fringes…everywhere you look, there’s something that shows off this “overflowing” side. »

Bar, central room

A bar to drink, but also to see and be seen. Benoit Linero

“The bar, of course, had to match the place. It is lit by classic two-tone mirrors and browner. I wanted this bar to suggest the idea of being able to see here, but also to be able to watch others. In addition, due to the reflections, it gives depth to the place.

Careful lighting

The warm light varies according to the time of the evening. Benoit Linero

“There was a lot of work on the light. We wanted it to be very hot. Paris society and I are very interested in the importance of lighting. We agreed on three enlightening scenarios, depending on the moment of the evening, which included many thoughts and creations. For example, we blew glass globes with amber colored seeds to give the impression of candlelight going on throughout the evening.”

Kudos to the curve

Daphne Dejeux preferred curves and roundness to add softness. Benoit Linero

“Everything is curved in Mondaine, there is roundness everywhere. It is a sign of drunkenness, at the moment when you lose control a little. The whole area is designed like this. I even added curved balustrades to a staircase that was too plain and too hard of a line. I even dared to draw a pattern of mouths, breasts, butts intertwining in the heart of this ladder. It brings a bit of a sulphurous side to it, evoking some misplaced ideas to keep in mind at the end of the evening. But it also helps to place a very soft feel.
