Andy Warhol ‘Blue’ Marilyn Monroe Portrait Up For Auction For Estimated Record $ 200 Million –

If it actually sells, Christie’s “Lot 36A” – signed and dated (1964) a piece of acrylic linen and silk -screen ink – will be the most expensive 20th century work sold at auction. Picasso’s “Algerian Women” currently holds this honor. In 2015 it sold for $ 179.4 million.

Christie’s was Design a Work PictureThe Thomas and Doris Aman Foundation will take place from Zurich on April 29 in front of Rockefeller Center in Manhattan and will run until May 13.

Warhol’s auction record to date is $ 104.5 million paid for the “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)” in 2013.

Alex Rother, Christie’s 20th and 21st century art director, called the portrait “the most important painting of the 20th century for auction in the last generation”.

The 40- to 40-inch work is part of a series of photos taken by pop artist Monroe in August 1962 after her death from a drug overdose. They became known as the “shot” series after Warhol’s “Factory” host. They were shot by a studio in Manhattan with a gun, which took pictures that were later fixed.

Christie described the work as “the classic beauty of Milo Venus” and called it “A. Modern” Mona Lisa “”

He credits Warhol for uniquely reinforcing Monroe’s “myth” because of the artist’s “unique ability to capture the humble beauty of a global superstar”.
