A new Instagram page created on February 8 condemns the sexist messages, among the hate and threats, that some MPs receive every day on social networks.
“Officially, I am asking you to punish the ravaged leader Russo. Lock up the madman.’ Starting February 8th, particularly violent, hateful, sexist or even racist messages sent to elected officials on social networks appear on the Balance ton intimidation Instagram account. This initiative was initiated by Marion Nadaud, the communication director of the environmental group of the National Assembly. The goal is to send a “message of restraint” to say “that we will not be silent,” the founder claims. In other words, “let fear change sides.”
A preventive tool
“Social networks do not protect women from violent messages. As long as justice is not adapted, suppressed by the speed of the networks, we cannot wait for something to happen,” Marion Nadaud previously explained to AFP. “It’s a very small action, but it’s to show them that we’re not going to let it go,” he continues. A necessary action, despite the violence that he has to “digest” every day for two weeks. “Each morning, since this violence, is not good for me,” he admits.
Insults of a sexual nature
As the communicator points out, too many female politicians face gender-based violence in their workplace. Sexism, which once spread at home, on the networks. “It’s also a way to get them out of it. To not leave them alone,” explains Marion Nadaud. The posts listed so far are mostly about the selected environmentalists who arrived in the hemisphere in 2022: Cyril Chatelet, Lisa Bellucco, Marie-Charlotte Gary, Julie Laernoes and Sandrine Rousseau. The latter, which is often targeted, responds. “What’s amazing to me is how sexualized the abuse is.” And continue. “Every time I talk about feminism, there’s a climax. (…) We are deeply dominated. It also shows the culture of rape. The woman does not satisfy them, it continues.

Marie Nadaud for Hope, however, says that the creation of this new Instagram has been very well received in political circles. “It’s a word that needs to be heard,” he said. Because “insults and threats against women are far from being reserved for environmentalists, but apply to all political parties.”
