Selena Gomez recently faced a weight gain crisis that she attributed to her lupus medication, and she told trolls she shamed them to “take it.”
“Not a model, never will be” Gomez said during a TikTok live stream which went viral on Twitter on Thursday.
“I think they’re wonderful, mind you, they’re definitely not,” she continued. “I just wanted to say I love you and thank you for your support and understanding. And if not, go away, because honestly, I don’t believe in shaming people for their bodies or anything.”
Reports first surfaced in 2013 that Gomez had been diagnosed with lupus, and the actor and singer confirmed the news in 2015. Since then, she’s been open about her experience, even recounting the associated kidney transplant in a post on Instagram since 2017.
“I tend to put on a lot of water weight and that’s very normal,” she said this week. “When I don’t do that, I tend to lose weight. Really guys, I just wanted to…encourage anyone who is ashamed of what I’m going through and no one knows the real story.
“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and amazing,” Gomez continued. “Yes, there are days when we might feel like shit, but I’d rather be healthy and take care of myself. And my medication is important and I think that helps me.”
Gomez spoke about the online vitriol she’s received before. On Instagram last year, she proclaimed: ‘I don’t care about my weight, because people weigh anyway. “You are too small”, “you are too big”, “this is not good”. Bitch, I’m perfect just the way I am.
Gomez told Vogue in 2021 that she personally withdrew from social media for three years, instead sending material to an assistant to publish, due to the criticism she receives. The artist has spoken out about the need to expand mental health services and is using her Rare Beauty brand to raise millions of dollars in support.
Lupus, an autoimmune disease that commonly causes joint pain, swelling and fatigue, can lead to serious kidney damage and inflammation of the heart, according to the Mayo Clinic. Gomez underwent chemotherapy in addition to intravenous drugs and a transplant in 2017.
Gomez, who was nominated for best TV actress in a comedy/musical series for her role in Hulu’s “Only Murders In The Building” at the 2023 Golden Globes, addressed the scrutiny she receives online during a stream live TikTok on the way to the ceremony. .
“I’m a little older now because I had fun on vacation,” she and sister Gracie Elliott Teefey, 9, said in the video. “I mean, right?” Gomez laughed at Gracie. “But we don’t care.”
