This year’s Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film is contested by entries from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, mostly debut entries, among which this Saturday, February 11, the winner will be announced at a gala concert that will take place in Spanish city of Seville.

The list of Ibero-American nominees opens its arms to the future of flawless debut films facing one of the best Latin American directors in the world, the Argentinian Santiago Mitrewhich rivals “Argentina 1985”, a comprehensive, precise work, unsurpassedly interpreted by his compatriot Ricardo Darin.

“Argentina 1985” part as a favourite, inspired by a true story about a dictatorship in a country that has already won awards at festivals such as Venice (Italy) or San Sebastian (Spain) and also competes among the best international films at the Oscars.

Night of Fire is the first drama film by Tatiana Hueso, a Salvadoran Mexican, after several short films and documentaries, to win several awards in Mexico.

The Flock is the first feature film by Colombian Andrés Ramirez Pulido to win recognition at festivals such as Cannes (France); Utama, also the first of Bolivian Alejandro Loays Grisi to be awarded at the Sundance Film Festival in the USA; and “1976”, the debut feature film by Chile’s Manuela Martelli, three Latin “pearls” with themes as different as they are exciting.

LOS GOYA 2023 PARTIES WITH FIXED FAVORITES

This edition of the Spanish Film Awards is one of the most competitive due to the high quality of entries and the growing parity that can be seen in the top prize nominations.

What’s new is that the number of nominees in each category has increased to six, and best costume design has six nominations, which has long been recognized by the industry, providing more opportunities to showcase more work.

French actress Juliette Binoche (Paris, 1966), laureate Oscar (“The English Patient”, 1996) and nominated in 2000 for “Chocolate”, will receive an international Goya Award.

While the honorary award will go to the Spanish director Carlos Saura (Huesca, 1932), winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin for the film “Deprisa, deprisa” (1981) and the author of such masterpieces as “La caza” (1966), “Cría crows ” (1976) or “Mint Frappe” (1967). (EFE)
