Stephen Colbert said there’s a fundamental reason the nation is on the brink of crisis as Republicans threaten to block any “clean” bill to raise the debt ceiling.
This threat could cause the government to default on its debt. That’s because House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has promised members of his party that he will use the deadline as leverage to get spending cuts from the White House.
That concession, Colbert noted, was essential for McCarthy to win the support of far-right lawmakers in his agonized bid to become speaker.
“And that was the least painful concession he had to make, as he was reminded every time Marjorie Taylor Greene shows off her scrotum with shadow,” Colbert said, then provided a censored image of the box of shadow.
