Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Ndileka Mandela has defended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after a report accused them of taking advantage of her grandfather’s name.
The activist wrote in a new essay for The Independent that The Australian misquoted her when it reported that she was upset that Meghan and Harry were “using” her grandfather’s name and legacy to promote a Netflix docu-series. The series, “Live to Lead”, was inspired by Nelson Mandela.
The Australian article is no longer online. The station did not respond to a request for comment.
Ndileka Mandela wrote in The Independent that she said no such thing.
“When people recently accused me of criticizing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for ‘taking advantage’ of my grandfather’s name, I was shocked,” she wrote in an article published on Saturday. “Because it was fake. I have never accused Harry and Meghan of doing this.”

Mandela said his words were “armed” and “misused to attack a black woman who has effectively been removed from the British royal family”.
“In fact, I greatly admire Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for their courageous efforts to stand up for those less privileged than themselves: vulnerable people, women and people of color,” Mandela wrote, echoing sentiments expressed in recent essays for The Atlantic and Newsweek. . .
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have dominated the headlines more than usual in the past two months following the release of their highly anticipated Netflix series ‘Harry & Meghan’ and their media tour to promote Prince Harry’s memoir ‘Spare’.
Nearly three weeks after the launch of Harry’s book, it’s back to business as usual for the royal family as the couple’s Archewell Foundation released its impact report on Sunday. The foundation announced that it will focus on three main pillars for the future: building a better online world, restoring trust in information and improving communities.
